Two men hit by gunfire Monday have died following a shooting in Old North Sacramento, an area of the city hit hard recently by brazen gun violence.

Monday’s shooting was reported about 1:20 p.m. in the 800 block of Lampasas Avenue, said Sgt. Zach Eaton, a Sacramento Police Department spokesman.

Officers arrived at the scene and found one of the victims in a vacant lot just east of Beaumont Street, Eaton said. The other shooting victim was found later, but Eaton said it was unclear to him where exactly the other wounded man was found.

Both men suffered serious injuries in the shooting and were taken by ambulance to a hospital where they were pronounced dead. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release their names after their families have been notified.

Investigators are still searching for a suspect, but Eaton said he didn’t have any suspect information to release. It’s unclear to investigators if one or more suspects were involved.

He said detectives were still trying to determine what exactly led to the shooting. The motive was unclear. Eaton said investigators were speaking to witnesses at the scene.

”We’ve seen some rising gun violence in our city over the past couple of years,” Eaton told news reporters. “Even one homicide is too many. And like I’ve said before, shooting like this in our community are unacceptable.”

Police had closed Lampasas, between Beaumont and Rio Linda Boulevard as officers worked at the scene. Homicide detectives were on their way to take over the investigation.

Eaton said officers were expected to remain at the scene for several hours, at least through midnight. Residents will not have access to some parked vehicles inside the crime scene, but he said they owe to the victims of this shooting and their families to conduct a “meticulous” investigation and document it correctly.

The police spokesman said he did not have any information that links Monday’s shooting to recent acts of gun violence in North Sacramento.

Seven people — all adults — suffered non-life-threatening injuries last week when they were hit by gunfire in a late night shooting in the nearby Del Paso Heights area. The shooting was reported shortly after 10:30 p.m. June 7 near the 1600 block of Grand Avenue, where one wounded victim was found. Another victim was found across the street from Grant Union High School, and the five others were found at a nearby hospital.

Last month, a late night shooting in Old North Sacramento wounded four people, including a 10-year-old boy and a 12-month-old girl. The shooting was reported shortly after 10 p.m. May 13 near Del Paso Boulevard and Fairfield Street, where security cameras captured three unidentified men walking up to the Sunland Liquor, looking at a group around the corner and then firing shots before running away, authorities have said.

Officers found the boy and the girl, each with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. They were taken to a hospital. Officers later learned two adults also were admitted to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds that were not considered life-threatening.

“Our department is committed to addressing these problems, and we’re continuing to work with our community in partnership,” Eaton said about the recent violence in North Sacramento. “Public safety is a shared responsibility, and we’re talking with our business owners about how we can mitigate other issues that aren’t violent crime related. I know that burglary and robbery concerns are out there, too.”
