Man sentenced after killing 1, injuring 2 in shooting at home rented by ex-Kings player
A man who murdered his roommate and shot two others in 2019 at a Vineyard home leased by a former Sacramento Kings player was sentenced Friday to 114 years to life in prison.
Trey Hallman, 30, was convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Terrell Brown, 26, and two counts of attempted murder for Blakye Ares and Damon Saunders.
Prosecutors said Hallman unleashed 14 bullets at a Tuscan-style estate rented from former Kings center Willie Cauley-Stein in a surprise attack after donning a bulletproof-style vest. The two roommates were shot while they slept, prosecutors said, in a five-bedroom, five-bathroom estate on the corner of Clover Ranch Drive and Vineyard Road. The home was valued at $1.2 million in 2019.
“The defendant has his reasons,” deputy district attorney Samuel Alexander said during his closing arguments. “They are nonsensical. … And, I submit to you, that he does not even believe them.”
Hallman’s defense attorney Daniel Karalash had argued his client suffered multiple traumatic brain injuries and was not aware of his actions during the Aug. 23, 2019 attack. He suffered those apparent injuries, Karalash said, after a lengthy football career capped while playing wide receiver at Division I Southeastern Louisiana University.
The 30-year-old who had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity was found legally sane July 10 by jurors in a second phase of the trial to determine his mental status, according to court records.
A motion to grant Hallman a new trial was also denied Friday, according to online court records.
Cauley-Stein, who at the time of the shooting had moved on to play with the Golden State Warriors, was not at the property at the time of the shooting. The 7-foot center played last season for an Italian hoops team and could not be reached for comment.
Hallman was in custody Saturday at the downtown Sacramento County Main Jail before his transfer to state prison.
