Man killed after firing on Sacramento deputies during rooftop standoff in Carmichael
An armed man was shot and killed Thursday morning in Carmichael after he fired on Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies during a rooftop standoff.
Deputies were called about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday to the 6600 block of Moraga Drive at Dewey Drive for a report of a 24-year-old man who fired a gun inside a residence during an argument with roommates, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi. When deputies arrived, the suspect fled the scene and authorities set up a perimeter to catch him.
Officers from the Roseville Police Department, Citrus Heights Police Department, and deputies from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist, the Sheriff’s Office said in a later news release.
After two hours, deputies located the man several blocks north atop the roof of a home on the 6800 block of Ashfield Way near Hillhurst Drive. According to radio dispatches reviewed by The Sacramento Bee, the home was occupied by a family who did not know the man.
Deputies tried to coax the man to surrender without success for more than an hour as they positioned two Bearcats and other armored vehicles around the home to corner the suspect.
About 3:45 a.m. Thursday, the man fired upon the Bearcats and SWAT deputies. According to radio calls, as the Bearcats moved closer to the home, the man started to walk along the roof and search for an escape path. At one point, he tried to make his way inside the occupied home through a window, Gandhi said.
When the man fired at them again, deputies returned fire and fatally wounded the suspect, Gandhi said.
“Three deputies from the sheriff’s SWAT team returned fire, mortally wounding him,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Deputies then were able to reach the residents inside, who were not injured. No deputies were injured, Gandhi said.
Deputies and investigators remained on scene Thursday morning; however, schools in the area — Harry Dewey Fundamental Elementary School, Will Rogers Middle School and Del Campo High School — operated as normal.
The identity of the suspect was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office’s professional standards division will investigate the shooting, which is standard practice. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will conduct its own review of the shooting. In the coming days, the Sheriff’s Office is expected to release a community briefing video that will include body camera video and other information, in compliance with state law.
