Girl, 9, killed in I-80 crash near Roseville involving alleged drunk driver, CHP says
A 9-year-old girl was killed in a crash Saturday morning after a vehicle slammed into another that was left stranded on Interstate 80 near Roseville by an alleged drunk driver, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A 36-year-old Sacramento woman lost control of her white Hyundai Elantra on eastbound I-80 around 5:20 a.m. and spun out across the lanes, according to a news release from the CHP’s Auburn office.
The car became disabled in the fast lane, and the woman began walking along the shoulder of the freeway just east of Riverside Avenue, CHP officials said.
Multiple cars narrowly avoided the Hyundai Elantra, but a Fremont man driving a Honda CR-V could not and crashed into it, the CHP said.
The Fremont man was driving with two children in the vehicle, including a 9-year-old girl who was hospitalized at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
The girl died from her injuries at the hospital, the CHP said.
The Sacramento woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, the CHP said.
I-80 was closed in the area for about 40 minutes but has since reopened, authorities said.
