Driver injured after car in Sacramento veers off city street and crashes onto Interstate 5

Police tape at crime scene

A driver was seriously injured Monday after their car veered off a city surface street in Sacramento and crashed onto the Interstate 5 freeway, police said.

The car crash was first reported shortly before 1 p.m. when the vehicle drove off West El Camino Avenue in Sacramento and crashed onto the northbound lanes of I-5, according to the California Highway Patrol’s online dispatch records.

Images captured on Caltrans cameras showed the car crashed and came to rest on its roof along the side of the freeway.

Officer Allison Smith, a spokesperson for the Sacramento Police Department, confirmed the car drove off the city street and crashed onto I-5. Since the crash originated on a city street, the Police Department took over the investigation.

Smith said the driver suffered critical injuries in the single-vehicle crash but was in stable condition at a hospital. No further information about the injured driver was available.

Authorities closed West El Camino Avenue, between Gateway Oaks and Azevedo drives, as officers investigated the crash. That road was reopened to vehicle traffic about 90 minutes after the crash.
