Murder charge added in January midtown Sacramento stabbing after victim dies of attack wounds

Bars from a jail cell frame a door being locked.

A man grievously wounded in a late January stabbing in Sacramento’s midtown has died, Sacramento police said late Thursday, and the man’s alleged assailant now faces new murder charges in the attack.

Mark Reese, 55, has been held in Sacramento County Main Jail since the Jan. 26 stabbing attack at 23rd and I streets. Reese was arrested at the scene by Sacramento police that January night and later booked on suspicion of felony assault.

The victim was identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office as James Kergan, 76.

Sacramento Police Department in a statement on social media said it learned Kerganhad died Thursday of his injuries at an area hospital. Reese was booked on the new charge and department homicide detectives have taken over the case.

Reese will next appear March 27 in Sacramento Superior Court, jail records show.

Sacramento police investigators are asking anyone who saw the incident or who has any information to call the department at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
