Elk Grove man, 30, identified as victim in violent Sacramento police chase crash

hit and run fatality

The man killed when a fleeing parolee crashed into a half-dozen cars on a busy Florin Road while eluding Sacramento police Saturday has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.

Huynh Huu Duc Nguyen, or Duc Nguyen, of Elk Grove, was 30. His car was one of at least six vehicles involved in a violent collision at Florin Road and Greenhaven Drive triggered by Daniel Cunningham, 34, of Sacramento, said Sacramento Police Department officials.

Nguyen immigrated to the United States from Vietnam four years ago, according to news reports. On Monday, a tiny memorial to Nguyen sat on the street corner where he lost his life. Candles, coconut water, incense and flowers shared space with small plates of Mandarin oranges, crispy rolls and bowls of rice at the roadside.

Officers spotted Cunningham, a felon at large who was wanted on suspicion of domestic violence stemming from an incident June 1. He was seen by officers near Florin and Greenhaven shortly after a woman collecting her belongings from her home on nearby Farm Dale Way told police a man she had accused of domestic violence was at the home, department officials said.

Officers tried to stop Cunningham but the Sacramento man headed west onto Greenhaven at high speed, colliding into six vehicles at Florin and Greenhaven, including the one driven by the 30-year-old Nguyen. Sacramento Fire Department personnel declared Nguyen dead at the scene.

Cunningham fled his wrecked vehicle but was captured by officers and a police dog after a brief chase.

Cunningham was booked Saturday into Sacramento County Main Jail. He faces charges of hit and run causing death and vehicular manslaughter in the collision that left Nguyen dead.

He also faces charges of evading a peace officer causing serious bodily injury or death; and resisting a peace officer, along with corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant and a parole violation, according to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office booking information.

Cunningham is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Sacramento Superior Court.
