Sacramento County men accused of shooting, beating victim in violent May attack

Bars from a jail cell frame a door being locked.

Two men accused in a violent May attack that left a Sacramento County man with severe injuries and a gunshot wound to the face remain in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail awaiting court dates.

Samuel Marian Mattia, 44, and Robert Wayne Treat, 51, face numerous charges in the attack. Mattia returns July 10 to Sacramento Superior Court on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, receiving a stolen vehicle and vehicle theft. Mattia is also being held on unrelated felony domestic violence warrants, according to jail records.

Treat will appear Thursday in Sacramento Superior Court on suspicion of felony robbery, battery and assault with a deadly weapon in the attack.

Both Mattia and Treat are being held without bail in the Sacramento County Main Jail.

Sacramento County sheriff’s officials said the victim was on a property near Marysville and Elkhorn boulevards in the Rio Linda area May 24, inspecting a trailer listed for sale, when he was shot.

He told deputies that the suspected gunman, later identified as Mattia, and a second unidentified man then beat him with baseball bats. Mattia allegedly took the man’s wallet and car keys before driving away with the victim’s friend still inside the vehicle, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies later located Mattia behind the wheel of the stolen car. He fled with the passenger still inside but was captured after a brief chase, deputies said.

Treat was detained but later released, the Sheriff’s Office said. Detectives following up on their initial investigation later linked Treat to the attack and robbery and arrested him as an accomplice in the assault, the Sheriff’s Office said.
