Police advise, lift lockdowns at 3 schools after car chase from Broadway

Police tape at crime scene

A car chase in Upper Land Park led police to advise three nearby schools to go on lockdown Monday morning, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Officers tried to make a traffic stop around 7:30 a.m. near the corner of Broadway and 5th Street, said Officer Allison Smith, a department spokesperson. The driver did not stop, instead entering the neighborhood south of Broadway. The person stopped driving on the 100 block of Seavey Circle, Smith said, and ran away.

Smith said police recommended lockdowns at Arthur A. Benjamin Health Professions High School, Leataata Floyd Elementary School and a SETA Head Start facility on Seavey Circle. Officers searched the area with the help of a drone, but later left without finding the driver they were pursuing, Smith said.

A person who answered the phone at Health Professions High School on McClatchy Way said a lockdown began there around 8 a.m. The office staff member, who declined to provide a name, said no programs were taking place at the school this week, so only office staff were affected.

It was not immediately clear what, if any, activities were occurring at the two other schools during summer break. The lockdowns were lifted after about an hour and a half, Smith said.
