Man who fired at Sacramento deputies in 2021 standoff gets 72 years in prison
A man who fired nine shots at Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies during an hourslong standoff in a La Riviera neighborhood in 2021 has been sentenced to more than 72 years in prison.
Zachary Taylor Sheeran, 46, was convicted by a Sacramento County jury in April of attempted murder, robbery, assault with a firearm and assault with a semi-automatic firearm in the incident, which began with reports of a shooting on the 9300 block of Appalachian Drive, Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho’s office said in a news release Monday.
Deputies arrived at 4:30 p.m. on an August afternoon to find a man suffering a gunshot wound, according to previous Bee reporting. A man later identified as Sheeran opened fire on the deputies as they were administering first aid, the previous reporting shows.
The deputies were not hit by the gunfire, and managed to escape with the victim, taking him to a hospital for treatment.
But Sheeran, then 42, barricaded himself inside the garage of his nearby house and refused to come out, the D.A.’s Office said, firing at the deputies from his garage window. He eventually emerged after a three-hour standoff.
The incident began when Sheeran demanded that the shooting victim give him a pair of binoculars, prosecutors said. He then shot the victim in the back; the victim survived.
Sheeran was sentenced Aug. 15 to 72 years and four months in prison, according to the D.A.’s Office.
Records show that as of Monday, Sheeran remained held in the Sacramento County Main Jail.
