A jury convicted two men of first-degree murder in connection with a 2020 New Year’s Day shooting that left a 23-year-old dead, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Darquan Jackson and Alizey Whitfield were also convicted of assault with a semi-automatic firearm. Both face a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in state prison, the DA’s office reported. The jury convicted Whitfield of the additional charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Jackson and Whitfield shot and killed Hubert Calimee in 2020 during a party at the Ramada Inn in Arden Arcade. Calimee and another man were reportedly attending a party at the hotel when Jackson, Whitfield and Robert Massingale approached the victim in the parking lot and began shooting, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in 2020.

Massingale drove the car Whitfield and Jackson fled in, the DA’s office reported. Prior to Jackson and Whitfield’s trial, Massingale was sentenced to 16 years in state prison for his involvement in the case.

Jackson and Whitfield’s sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 19.
