The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department arrested a man in a fatal shooting Tuesday in Olivehurst following a standoff with deputies.

David Lopez Martinez, 36, was booked into the Yuba County Jail in Marysville on suspicion of homicide and other felonies, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff’s officials said emergency dispatchers received a 911 call about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday reporting a man, later identified as Martinez, trying to force his way into a home on Flemming Way in Olivehurst. Shots were fired a short time later, killing a man inside, authorities said.

Yuba County Sheriff’s Department’s coroner division later identified the man as Octavio Montano Navarro, 47.

Several of Navarro’s family members, including small children, were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but were not hurt, said sheriff’s officials in a statement on Wednesday.

Investigators on Wednesday were still determining the circumstances that led to the shooting. Martinez and Navarro were acquaintances who lived near each other, said sheriff’s officials.

Sheriff’s investigators later tracked Martinez to a home in the 1800 block of Ninth Avenue in Olivehurst and tried to contact him, but he refused to come out and barricaded himself inside, officials said.

After several hours of negotiations, sheriff’s tactical officers used less-lethal weapons to force Martinez out of the home and into custody, the Sheriff’s Department said.
