An October preliminary hearing was set Friday for the Carmichael man who authorities say tried to kill his children, then end his own life during an April custody visit.
Charles Lee Ewers, 39, faces allegations of attempted murder and willful harm to a child causing great bodily injury in the incident. His hearing is set for Oct. 9 in Sacramento Superior Court, according to his attorney, Kelly Babineau. Ewers remains held without bail in Sacramento County custody.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies said Ewers was found in his car with his sons, 8 and 10, in the back seat. The car’s engine was running and a hose was sending carbon monoxide from the exhaust to the inside of the vehicle.
Authorities said the children had been badly beaten and were semiconscious when they were pulled from the car. Authorities were called to Ewer’s home by the childrens’ mother, authorities said.
