Sacramento high school graduations are moving to a new venue. Where and when they’ll happen
Sacramento City Unified School District is moving a handful of high school graduation ceremonies to a new venue this summer.
The district recently announced dates and locations for several summer 2025 commencement ceremonies.
“Previously the comprehensive schools have held graduations at Sutter Health Park” in West Sacramento, district spokesperson Alexander Goldberg wrote in a Thursday email to The Sacramento Bee. “But this year they will be at SAFE Credit Union Convention Center (in downtown Sacramento).”
It’s the third time the district has swapped commencement venues in recent years, Goldberg said, noting that many of the district’s graduation ceremonies were held at Sacramento Memorial Auditorium prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Goldberg said the district is “still planning” graduations for smaller schools.
According to the district’s website, more information about the 2025 graduation ceremonies “will be posted this spring.”
Why did Sacramento school district change venues?
Goldberg said the decision to switch venues again was prompted in part by Sacramento’s scorching summer weather.
“Last summer we decided to search for a new venue indoors to help with comfort of families due to the heat we’ve been experiencing recently,” he said. “The decision to move was focused on trying to move back to a climate-controlled environment.”
Goldberg said schedules for the Sacramento River Cats and Athletics baseball teams also played a role.
“I’m not certain Sutter Health Park would have been able to accommodate us this year,” he told The Bee.
While the A’s will be away on a road trip in Los Angeles on June 10 and 11, when several Sacramento City Unified graduation ceremonies are scheduled, the River Cats will host the Tacoma Rainiers at Sutter Health Park on June 10 through June 15.
