Sacramento woman killed crossing Highway 99 on foot after crash disabled vehicle, CHP says

A Sacramento woman was killed Sunday night after allegedly driving away from a collision, exiting her vehicle and walking into traffic on Highway 99 in Elk Grove, authorities said.

A Toyota Prius was involved in a three-vehicle collision on southbound Highway 99 near Laguna Boulevard shortly after 10:30 p.m., the California Highway Patrol South Sacramento office said in a news release.

No one was injured in the initial crash, but the Prius continued to drive with major front-end damage for about half a mile south on the highway, according to the news release.

The vehicle then became disabled near the center median, and the driver “exited the vehicle, climbed over the center median, and began crossing northbound traffic” for unknown reasons, the news release said.

The woman, identified only as a 20-year-old Sacramento resident, was struck by a Honda Civic traveling in the No. 2 lane of northbound Highway 99 that was unable to avoid the pedestrian, the CHP said.

That driver, a 29-year-old Sacramento man, stopped at the scene and called 911 to report he had hit an unknown object. The driver of the Honda cooperated with authorities and was later released from the scene.

CHP officers responded and Cosumnes Fire Department personnel pronounced the woman dead at the scene, on the shoulder of northbound Highway 99.

Anyone who witnessed either collision is asked to contact the CHP South Sacramento office at 916-681-2300 and ask for Officer Jim Young.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.
