Connector between 2 Sacramento freeways remains closed. Here’s the way around it
A key Sacramento connector ramp remained closed Monday, forcing drivers to navigate detours through city streets as Caltrans crews continued work at one of the region’s busiest freeway junctions.
The westbound connector of the Capital City Freeway to eastbound Highway 50 and Highway 99 remains closed through 6 p.m. Monday after being shut down Friday night for construction as part of the ongoing Fix 50 project.
The 70-hour shutdown was allowing Caltrans crews and contractors to replace concrete, upgrade drainage and install new traffic management systems, according to the highway agency. Caltrans said the work remains on schedule and the ramps are expected to reopen at or before 6 p.m.
But commuters will still need to get around the closure, especially during the afternoon and evening commute. Here’s how:
Drivers heading west on the Capital City Freeway — technically southbound unsigned Highway 51 — are advised by Caltrans to:
- Take the same onramp and continue westbound on the Capital City Freeway’s W-X portion (Exit 6A)
- Take the 10th Street exit (4B)
- Make a left turn at Riverside Boulevard
- Make another left at X Street after passing beneath the freeway
- Take the X Street on-ramp for eastbound Highway 50
No other ramps or connectors in the area are closed. The Fix 50 project, which started in 2021, continues to roll along and is expected to finish up by summer 2026.
