A Maryland grandmother was leaving a store when she saw a “colorful green” lottery ticket and couldn’t pass it up.

The 77-year-old from Bowie had already bought a few scratch-offs from Gem Liquors in Lanham but got back in line to buy two $10 Money Bag Multiplier tickets, according to a May 4 news release from the Maryland Lottery.

The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, scratched the new game in the store, the lottery said.

When she saw she had won $50,000, she was skeptical at first, she told lottery officials.

“I’ve won small amounts before, but this is the most money I’ve ever won,” she said, according to the lottery.

The woman repeatedly scanned the ticket and had her daughter check to make sure it was a winner, according to the lottery. Once she was convinced it was, the two “danced and shouted.”

The winner then put her ticket in a safe deposit box until she could go cash it in.

The retired Prince George’s County bookkeeper recently claimed her prize and told lottery officials she plans to use the money to spoil her family and her 14 grandchildren after using some of it for knee surgery.

The woman, who told officials she tries to play all new lottery games, said she has no plans of stopping.

“I’ll continue to play, and eventually I’ll win the big one again,” she told lottery officials.

Gem Liquors will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket, the lottery said.

Bowie is about 30 miles southwest of Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
