His grocery list was simple: bananas and applesauce. Then, the Virginia man picked up an addition — a lottery ticket that ended up being a top prize winner, officials said.

Sherman Morning, from Hampton, won a $100,000 prize after purchasing a $5 ticket for the $100,000 Extreme Cash game during a grocery run, the Virginia Lottery said in a March 14 news release.

“It feels good,” Morning told the lottery when he claimed his prize.

He purchased his winning ticket at a Food Lion in Newport News, lottery officials said.

This was the first top prize out of three available in the game, which began in January, according to lottery officials.

The odds of winning a top prize are 1 in 1,101,600, the lottery said.

The game features prizes ranging from $5 to $100,000. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 4.18, according to the lottery.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
