Two people were rescued from rising water in Alaska after the sandbar they were on “turned into an island before disappearing around them,” firefighters said.

A man and his young relative, whose age wasn’t provided, were fishing from a sandbar on Ship Creek the afternoon of Aug. 5, the Anchorage Fire Department said in a Facebook post that day.

Water began to quickly rise and soon “reached their armpits,” firefighters said.

They weren’t wearing life jackets, according to firefighters.

The fire department responded and the anglers were provided life jackets and taken to shore.

The easy-to-access Ship Creek is a popular fishing area, according to firefighters, but they warned that the water moves quickly when the tide comes in.
