An 11-year-old boy died after an accident at a Utah reservoir, deputies said.

A rope became caught up in a watercraft motor and pulled him under water Aug. 5 at Gunnison Bend Reservoir, the Millard County Sheriff’s Office said in an Aug. 6 post on Facebook.

He was taken to a hospital and then airlifted “for more advanced care,” deputies said, but he died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s office praised “the remarkable efforts made by others in the boy’s group and additional bystanders at the reservoir who quickly went into action, as well as the first responders and other medical personnel,” per the release.

The incident “is being investigated as an unfortunate accident,” according to deputies.

The reservoir is near Delta, which is about a 135-mile drive southwest from Salt Lake City.
