Sacramento freeze warning: Here’s how cold it will get and how to prepare for winter chill

Don’t be fooled by Wednesday morning’s clear skies and sun.

Freezing temperatures are expected to blow into Sacramento again overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

The service issued a freeze warning for 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday, as sub-freezing temperatures of 27 to 32 degrees are possible for the southern Sacramento Valley, Carquinez Strait and Delta and Northern San Joaquin Valley.

Forecasts show Wednesday night’s lows around 31, gusts as high as 26 mph and widespread frost after 4 a.m.

Thursday is expected sunny with a high near 57 and a low around 35.

Following the chill, meteorologists are also forecasting another winter storm to hit Saturday to Monday and moderate to heavy snowfall in the mountains and foothills.

Prepare for the cold

The service warns that frost and chilly conditions can ruin plants and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, such as burst water pipes.

It recommends that you protect your plants and wrapping, draining and allowing a slow drip for water pipes. People should also drain in-ground sprinkler systems and cover pipes that are above ground, the service advises.
