Rain could return to Sacramento, weather service says. Here’s when and how much

The Sacramento area can expect a breezy weekend with rain possibly returning to the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Brisk winds will whip through the capitol city starting Saturday and possibly continuing into Sunday, said meteorologist Katrina Hand at the weather service’s Sacramento office.

Hand said the area could receive gusty winds at 20 to 30 mph from the north and east.

The weather service is not concerned about these strong winds leading to potential fire activity in Northern California, she said.

Sacramento could see some “sprinkles” over the weekend, with one to two hundredths of an inch of rainfall expected, Hand said.

Will Lake Tahoe area get any snow?

A weather system coming from the north is forecast to bring colder air and some precipitation to the Tahoe Basin starting Friday night and lasting through Sunday, according to meteorologist Mark Deutschendorf with the National Weather Service’s Reno office.

Temperatures in South Lake Tahoe will be below average, with the high likely staying below freezing and lows dropping to the teens to low 20s, according to the forecast.

This freezing air means the Tahoe area should receive one to three inches of snow early Saturday morning, Deutschendorf said.

According to an area forecast discussion released early Wednesday by the weather agency, “precipitable water” in the air was at a record low on Tuesday — measuring at only 0.06 inches.

The means how much precipitation there would be if the water vapor in the air turned into rain.

Deutschendorf said the Sierra Nevada is expected to be dry through the rest of January.

Winds are predicted to pick up across the mountains, he said.

Lake Tahoe may see wind gusts up to 20 to 25 mph, and higher elevations could reach 50 to 60 mph.

According to Deutschendorf, mountain crests on the west side of the ridge are expected to see the strongest winds from this system.

The wind chill in higher elevations could reach below zero, he said.
