Republic FC’s bid to upset a second consecutive English Premier League team goes awry in the 48th minute Saturday night when defender James Kiffe volleys a header into his own net to give Newcastle United FC a 1-0 win in an international friendly in front of an announced sellout crowd of 11,442 at Bonney Field.
River Cats: Younger Bochy eyes improvement
Last September, right-hander Brett Bochy became the first son to pitch for his manager/father in a major-league game when he threw for Bruce Bochy’s Giants. Brett is no longer part of the Giants’ 40-man roster, but while he has no illusions of pitching for his father this season, he says he’s trying to improve while a member of the River Cats.

A’s: Broadcaster returns to booth
