Sports Night: Will River Cats fuel Giants’ postseason push?
Furillo: In the minors, it’s about the majors
Yes, the River Cats have the second-worst record in the Pacific Coast League. But the real purpose of a minor-league team is to support its major-league affiliate. It’s all about the majors, even in the minors. So its possible that trades or a call-up to the playoff-pursuing Giants loom for the River Cats.
Giants: Bumgarner wins 10th, caps sweep of Diamondbacks
Madison Bumgarner pitches just five innings, but he picks up his 10th win of the season as the Giants complete a three-game sweep of Arizona and win their sixth game in a row.
A’s: Smolinski powers rout of Twins
Jake Smolinski follows a clutch performance in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Minnesota in 10 innings with another eye-opening effort in Sunday’s 14-1 win. He hits two home runs and drives in four runs. Smolinski started the season with the Texas Rangers, but was designated for assignment in mid-June. All he did in Triple-A Nashville was hit .432 with two homers and nine RBIs before being called up July 7.
