The mayoral gloves are off as the Kings and Golden State Warriors get ready to tip off Sunday for Game 7 of what has been a stellar first-round NBA playoff series.
The disses started prior to Game 6 on Friday, when San Francisco Mayor London Breed had some choice words about the city of Sacramento as she joined NBC Sports Bay Area for an interview with the Warriors pregame TV crew.
“When you go traveling to visit cities, do you ever go to Sacramento? Is that ever on your bucket list?” said Breed, decked out in Warriors blue. “I’m just gonna leave it at that.”
Breed then predicted a Warriors win in Game 6, saying the reigning champs would make the most of home court advantage at Chase Center.
The Kings dominated the Warriors 118-99, forcing Game 7 back in Sacramento.
Mayor Darrell Steinberg clapped back at Breed in a tweet about 90 minutes before tipoff Sunday.
“The good Mayor is as right about her bucket list as she is about her sports predictions,” Steinberg tweeted. “Can only assume she’s slightly disoriented by the constant lighting of the beam.”
Steinberg also boasted of “tens of thousands” of residents he said have “happily relocated” from San Francisco to Sacramento in recent years.
He wasn’t done.
“Whatever happens today, Game 7 is a win for both Northern California cities. One is a thriving, growing livable city/culinary capital capturing the hearts of sports fans and the imagination of the world. The other is San Francisco. Go Kings!”
The mayors are making up for some lost time with the trash talk. The current series marks the first time the Kings and Warriors have ever faced off in the NBA playoffs.
Before the series started, Steinberg offered a friendly wager with Breed about the outcome, saying he’d wear a Warriors jersey if Golden State won the series. But Breed reportedly never responded to the offer.
In a few hours, either Breed or Steinberg will get to keep bragging. The winner of Game 7, which tips off at 12:30 p.m. on ABC, will face the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round. The loser is eliminated.
