Martins Beach and unfettered capitalism
River parkway
Re “Will cleaning up the American River Parkway send more homeless people into the suburbs?” (sacbee.com, June 17): There is general agreement that solving the illegal camping in the American River Parkway requires vigorous enforcement of existing law. There is also agreement that there is nowhere for the illegal campers to go. What is needed is a homeless center that can accommodate large numbers of people, pets and property. Haven for Hope program in San Antonio provides the model. It shelters almost 2,000 people nightly in its combination of indoor and courtyard components. San Antonio’s homeless service organizations are also based there. It is an approach Sacramento should examine.

Time
Re “Daylight saving time could be a thing of the past in California” (sacbee.com, June 1): The best and only good reason to discontinue daylight saving time is now. With the temperature above 100, everyone’s power bill will rise. Elderly people on fixed income will be hurt the most. The Legislature should abolish this ridiculous practice of adjusting the time. Stay on regular time so the sun sets earlier and stop straining our air conditioners.

Martins Beach
Re “California moving to restore access to Martins Beach” (The Buzz, June 19): I laughed at the juxtaposition of the quote from Sen. Mike Morrell, R-Rancho Cucamonga, about the Board of Equalization bemoaning overreaching government, next to a piece about unfettered capitalism, where a rich fool thinks he can grab coastline. Were editors being ironic?
Carol Kennedy, Sacramento
