Sacramento Blue Diamond plant closes gift shop, ending 42-year run

The Blue Diamond gift shop will have its final day of operation Friday, a company spokesperson confirmed.

Located at 1701 C Street, the 42-year-old business is shutting its doors as parts of the Blue Diamond Growers’s Sacramento plant in midtown permanently close. The gift shop was known to sell a variety of almonds and spices.

In June 2025, Blue Diamond announced it would sell the majority of its processing plant property. However, the company planned to keep processing and storage on the north side of its campus. The decision was cost-based as the midtown facility was seen as outdated.

“...The challenges of running a plant from these historical buildings has become too costly and inefficient,” President and CEO Kai Bockmann wrote in a statement in 2025. “Streamlining our manufacturing plants is the right business move to further strengthen our market-leading position and bring increased value to our grower members.”

Blue Diamond’s midtown plant has had a long legacy within the Sacramento region, having spent 115-years in the area and formerly employing 600 workers, according to past Sacramento Bee reporting. Known as a prime tourist spot, the gift store opened in 1983 in place of the Del Monte fruit cannery.

Despite its closure, this will not be the end of almond gift shop sales, Chief Government and Public Affairs Officer Alicia Rockwell previously told the Bee that Blue Diamond will probably host pop-up around the Sacramento area.

As Blue Diamond shutters its doors, operations will be merged with the plants in Turlock and Salida, plant officials previously told the Bee.
