Whether you’re taking your green thumb to the garden, or learning to care for houseplants — spring has arrived in the Sacramento area and it’s time to start propagating.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, buying and taking care of houseplants became a popular activity for those spending most of their days at home. In 2020, more than 70% of North American greenhouses saw an increase in plant sales, according to Vox.
If you still have that itch to be one with the earth, here is a list of stores in the Sacramento area selling garden supplies, trees, flowers and other plants:
Green Acres Nursery & Supply
8501 Jackson Rd, Sacramento
Green Acres is a local, family–owned plant shop that specializes in houseplants, trees, palms, shrubs, fertilizers and even sod. At the Elk Grove, Folsom, Citrus Heights and Rocklin locations, the shop sells outdoor equipment like patio furniture, grills and large umbrellas.
For those wanting to learn more about gardening, the store also hosts a podcast, available on its website as well as other streaming platforms.
The Plant Foundry
3500 Broadway, Sacramento
In the Oak Park neighborhood, the Plant Foundry is a local women-owned nursery shop. The urban nursery, which has a focus on organic gardening, specializes in smaller, ornamental plants like flowers, artisan goods, garden tools and gifts.
Trees Outlet
9149 Gerber Rd, Sacramento
The Trees Outlet in south Sacramento sells a variety of fruit and ornamental trees in different sizes. Some trees available to purchase include Japanese maples, Chinese pistaches and olive trees.
Public Land Store
2598 21st Street, Sacramento
This nursery in downtown Sacramento doubles as a retail and gallery space for up-and-coming artists. In addition to selling and displaying paintings, the store specializes in unique cacti, succulents and other tropical houseplants.
Sac City Stems
5635 H St Unit F, Sacramento
Sac City Stems is a Black, woman-owned plant nursery that sells a variety of houseplants. Owner Mikaela Baker opened her store last year, seeking to turn her planting hobby into a business during the pandemic.
Talini’s Nursery
5601 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento
This garden center in East Sacramento sells a variety of plants including vegetable and fruit trees, as well as other home and garden items. The nursery features a statuary, succulents and cacti.
Fair Oaks Boulevard Nursery
4681 Fair Oaks Blvd, Sacramento
The Arden Arcade garden center has a wide selection of plants including berry and citrus trees, herbs and houseplants. It also has a plant delivery service.
