Resident fired shot in south Sacramento that killed man during robbery, police say
A man shot to death Monday morning in Sacramento may have been involved in a robbery inside a home before a resident fired a gun at him, police said Tuesday.
The shooting in the Parkway neighborhood was reported shortly before 9 a.m. Monday at the home in the 7300 block of Meadowgate Drive, just west of Franklin Boulevard and south of Florin Road.
Officers arrived at the home and found the man who had suffered at least one gunshot wound; he was on the ground in front of the home, according to a Sacramento Police Department news release.
On Tuesday afternoon, police officials announced that preliminary information gathered in the shooting investigation showed the man shot to death “may have been involved in a robbery that was occurring inside of the residence. A resident of the house then shot the male,” officials said in the news release.
Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took over the investigation. The detectives canvassed the neighborhood, seeking more information and evidence.
The detectives questioned the resident who fired the gun in the incident. The Police Department on Tuesday did not release his name or any further information about the shooting “to protect the integrity of this investigation,” according to the news release.
Police said detectives would complete their investigation and submit the information to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges are appropriate.
As of Tuesday evening, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office had not released the name of the man fatally wounded.
The Meadowgate Drive fatal shooting comes about three weeks after a man died in an Oct. 17 shooting in the nearby Fruitridge Manor neighborhood. Police said a man, later identified as 25-year-old Eddie Ward of Sacramento, was possibly shot by a homeowner during an attempted burglary in the 5500 block of 27th Avenue, just south of West Campus High School.
The Police Department asked anyone with information about this shooting to call officers at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357. Tips can also be submitted confidentially through the P3 Tips website and app.
