Citrus Heights man named as victim in park shooting that led to death of suspected gunman
Sacramento County officials released the name of man shot and killed Monday evening in a crowded park in Fair Oaks shortly before someone else chased down the suspected gunman and shot him in Citrus Heights.
Jesus Mejia Cruz, 30, of Citrus Heights was killed in the shooting at Fair Oaks Park, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. Jerzain Trenado Orozco, 41, also of Citrus Heights was shot on the north side of nearby Madison Avenue, and died later at a hospital.
The first shooting was reported by several 911 callers at the park at 11549 Fair Oaks Boulevard, just west of the Sacramento Public Library Fair Oaks branch. A group of men were gathered at the park when gunfire erupted.
A man, now identified as Orozco, walked up to the group, pulled out a gun and fired, targeting Cruz, Sacramento County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Rodney Grassmann has said. Cruz was later pronounced dead at the park. Grassmann said the suspected gunman then ran through the park, heading north across Madison Avenue.
The second shooting that killed Orozco occurred in front of a housing complex on Madison Avenue near Ventana Place in Citrus Heights after he was chased down by at least one unidentified armed person who shot him multiple times, Citrus Heights police spokesman Lt. Jason Baldwin has said.
On Monday night, the police spokesman said this was not a random shooting, and the people involved knew each other. Despite having so many witnesses at the scene, investigators have still not released any new information on the investigation or a suspect description for the gunman in the Citrus Heights shooting.
On Wednesday, Grassmann said the Sheriff’s Office did not have any new information to release from its investigation, but noted there’s no indication that anyone other than Orozco was responsible for the park shooting.
