CHP looks for witnesses in Sacramento freeway hit-and-run that killed pedestrian
The California Highway Patrol on Thursday was looking for potential witnesses of a deadly hit-and-run Monday night in Sacramento, where a pedestrian was struck by five vehicles on Capital City Freeway.
Shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, the CHP received reports of a pedestrian running in the southbound lanes of Capital City Freeway, also known as Business 80. The pedestrian was spotted on the freeway just north of X Street, according to a news release from the CHP South Sacramento Area Office.
Officers arrived at the scene and found a male pedestrian who had died from his injuries. The pedestrian was later identified as Shane Brent Waller, 34, who died in Monday’s hit-and-run, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Thursday. His city of residence was not available.
The CHP said the preliminary investigation shows that Waller was initially struck by a vehicle that left the area before authorities arrived.
After the vehicle in the hit-and-run struck Waller, drivers in four other vehicles were unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian again on the freeway, the CHP said. The drivers of these four vehicles remained at the scene and cooperated with investigating CHP officers.
The CHP said the hit-and-run investigation continues, and investigators were seeking help from anyone who may have witnessed the deadly hit-and-run or spotted the pedestrian in the freeway earlier.
Waller wasn’t the only pedestrian in a deadly hit-and-run this week in Sacramento. A man was struck by a vehicle early Tuesday Northgate Boulevard near the Arden Garden Connector. Sacramento police said the pedestrian died later at a hospital, and the suspected driver was arrested later on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death and driving under the influence.
Investigators asked anyone with information about Monday night’s fatal hit-and-run to call the CHP South Sacramento at 916-897-5600 during business hours or the Sacramento CHP Communications Center at 916-861-1300 after hours.
