Detectives arrested a suspect facing homicide and robbery charges in connection with an assault early Monday near the Central Oak Park neighborhood in Sacramento.

Verick Victor Mason, 25, of Sacramento was arrested in the deadly assault that occurred in the 3000 block of Stockton Boulevard just south of Broadway, the Sacramento Police Department announced Wednesday afternoon.

The assault was reported shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday. Officers arrived at the scene and found the man with “traumatic injuries” and began life-saving measures until medics arrived, said Officer Allison Smith, a police spokesperson.

The wounded man was taken by ambulance to a hospital were he was pronounced dead. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release his name and age after his family has been notified.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators took over the investigation, collecting evidence at the scene and questioning witnesses. Detectives later identified Mason as the suspect in the homicide.

Police said a patrol sergeant spotted Mason on Tuesday at a gas station not far from where the fatal assault occurred the day before. Mason was taken into custody, questioned by homicide detectives and arrested.

Mason was booked early Wednesday on the homicide and robbery charges at the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he was being held without bail as of Wednesday afternoon. He’s scheduled to appear for his arraignment hearing Thursday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court, jail records show.

The Police Department has not released any other details about the homicide investigation, including the manner of death.
