A 4-year-old stray dog came to a Missouri shelter struggling to breathe.

Though “he truly is the happiest and most lovable dog you’ll ever meet,” the shelter needed to determine why his breathing was labored.

A X-ray showed a ”heartbreaking” find in Benson’s neck — a bullet in his neck and bullet fragments in his nose, the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri said in a July 9 Facebook post.

The bullet fragments block airflow in Benson’s nose, but the shelter says they don’t cause him any pain or additional problems.

The Bernese mountain dog is ready to find a home, the Springfield shelter says, but he’ll need the “perfect match.”

“As he cannot breathe through his nose, he breathes through his mouth. Because of this, he is more susceptible to overheating, especially with his thick black coat and the summer heat,” the shelter said in the post.

While he loves to play and go for walks, the “kindhearted” dog requires a more relaxed lifestyle, according to the shelter.

“He just cannot be overexerting himself physically, such as tagging along on runs, outdoor hikes, or spending too much time in the sun,” the shelter said.

Despite his injuries, Benson “loves all people” and should get along with children and dogs.
