Gov. Newsom shuts down Trump’s grotesque comments about Rob Reiner | Opinion

Good job, Gavin

‘A sick man.’ Gavin Newsom blasts Trump’s reaction to Reiners’ deaths,” (sacbee.com, Dec. 16)

Thank you to Gov. Gavin Newsom for his reaction to President Donald Trump’s latest detestable behavior.

Trump’s description of Rob Reiner as having a “massive, unyielding and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS” is typical of this president. Any person who is willing to bend their knees is open to public humiliation by our leader.

Housing and homelessness

I have seen the cost of homelessness. Somehow, Sacramentans must do more | Opinion,” (sacbee.com, Sept. 25)

This opinion column correctly states that Sacramento’s moral fabric is frayed. It is troubling that we have a city desensitized to homelessness even as it develops strategies to fix it.

Sacramento has a deep housing deficit. The city has pledged to pursue mixed-use, transit-oriented development, utilizing by-right entitlements, the State Density Bonus Law, and accessory dwelling units in accordance with the framework outlined in Senate Bill 375.

Yet many tenants remain severely cost‑burdened. Without affordable homes, ongoing subsidies, focused rental aid and stronger safeguards against steep rent increases — especially as programs like the Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention Grant are cut — these policies will not reach vulnerable households.

Failing to fund our plans is not just procedural. It is a moral issue.

The cycle of homelessness

I have seen the cost of homelessness. Somehow, Sacramentans must do more | Opinion,” (sacbee.com, Sept. 25)

As someone who works closely with vulnerable families, I see the same pattern every day: people with untreated mental illness are ending up on the streets. Homelessness is not just a housing issue. It’s rooted in trauma, addiction and medical and behavioral health needs that often go unmet.

We cannot expect people to “stabilize” before they are offered support. That model fails. We need more funding for wraparound services, mobile mental health teams and permanent supportive housing. Stable housing and treatment must be offered together.

SCUSD’s budget mess

Sacramento City Unified School District faces fiscal insolvency, again,” (sacbee.com, Nov. 6)

The scale and stakes of the Sacramento City Unified School District’s budget mess have far-reaching implications.

We must focus on SCUSD’s system-wide fiscal crisis, the decisions that created it and a credible path forward. A $43 million shortfall, emergency spending freezes and the risk of county or state intervention affect every student, educator and taxpayer.

Remembering the Reiners

Rob Reiner remembered for political activism. ‘He made California a better place’,” (sacbee.com, Dec. 15)

Rob Reiner’s work influenced generations of Americans. The characters, dialogue and visuals he brought to life in film and television are woven throughout our culture.

Reiner loved our country, cared deeply about the future of our nation and fought for democracy. I am devastated to learn of the passing of Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. My thoughts are with their loved ones during this tragic time.
