Several blocks of downtown Sacramento near the Capitol are closed as police investigate a mass shooting that occurred early Sunday.

The shooting took place just after 2 a.m. near the 1000 block of K Street on the commercial strip leading to the Golden 1 Center, where the Sacramento Kings play. Six people were killed and 12 more wounded, according to police.

The shooting scene was strewn across at least two blocks, with broken glass and police markers on 10th Street from K to L.

Police closed L, K and J streets between 9 and 13th streets for the investigation.

Residents were asked to avoid the area, which is packed with restaurants and bars that leads to the Golden 1 Center. The Blue Line light-rail system is operating a bus bridge between Globe and 13th Street Station, a spokeswoman for Sacramento Regional Transit said. The line is operating normally otherwise, said Devra Selenis, a spokeswoman for RT.

Shell casings and broken glass were visible on K Street.

Police have not apprehended suspects, who were captured on video, police said.

Officers told reporters the area around the Capitol is safe because of the large police presence in the neighborhood.
