As wind continues to blow through California, you might spot fallen trees or branches around your home.
There isn’t a specific area where trees are likely to fall, said Matt Robinson, the public information manager for Sacramento County. Whether or not trees fall depends on their age, health, when it was planted and how hydrated it is, he said.
“If there’s ever a question about that, the homeowner should just call an arborist to find out,” Robinson said.
City of Sacramento
If you’re in the city of Sacramento and a tree on your private property comes down, you are responsible for clearing it, said Jennifer Singer the media and communications spokesperson for the city.
This means you’ll have to dispose of it as you would for any plants and shrubbery in your garden.
However, if a tree or its branches fall in the public right of ways, such as sidewalks, city streets or parks, then you should call 311 and report it.
“City crews can come out and clear the debris,” Singer said.
If your private tree falls over the street, then you can call the city for help.
In the case that a tree collapses over electrical wiring, assume that it is “energized and dangerous,” according to the city. Do not touch the tree or debris next it and call the Sacramento Municipal Utility District as soon as you can.
Sacramento County
The same rule for private property trees from the city applies to Sacramento County. If a tree in a private yard or garden tumbles down, it is up to the resident to remove it.
Robinson of Sacramento County said you can contact a tree company for guidance or help with the removal.
Some local tree services include Lopez Tree Service, Environmental Tree Service and Bailey Tree Company.
If your private tree falls into a creek in your backyard or on to a public right of way, then you can call 311 for assistance. You can also call 311 if a tree that was planted on the right of way, such as a curb, falls onto your property.
Otherwise, if it is still on your property, it is your responsibility.
“If there’s ever a question, go ahead and call 311. Crews will come out and talk to the homeowner and let them know whether or not they’ll take care of it or if it is the owner’s job to do it,” Robinson said.
