Sacramento Municipal Utility District announced Tuesday a potential need for rotating outages in its coverage area if energy is not conserved, as the power grid strains to keep up with demand during the heat wave.
If the rolling outages become necessary to lower the risk of widespread blackouts, SMUD would cycle through all 39 sections of the company’s coverage area before repeating the cycle. The outages would last about an hour, according to SMUD. The utility is asking costumers to conserve energy Tuesday evening to avoid rolling blackouts. No rolling blackouts have been issued as of 4:30 p.m.
Should it be needed, more than one section could be out at the same time, according to the SMUD rotating outage map. The lower numbered sections would go first.
